Versarien is an advanced materials start-up company commercialising technology invented in UK Universities. It is currently specialising in porous metal open cell materials and has successfully developed volume manufacturing methods for its copper alloys that offer world leading levels of heat transfer which is extremely attractive for the power electronics and semiconductor sectors.
A unique and patented idea invented at the University of Liverpool, the concept has been supported extensively by the Technology Strategy Board enabling far quicker growth than could have been possible organically. Versarien created a team to exploit this idea and to continue the initial research, which has resulted in contracts with several global blue chip organisations to deliver product to meet the needs of our demanding world. The structure of the material offers a very high surface area and is scalable, deployable, and customisable. These characteristics mean that it is hard to replicate, displace or offer similar performance for the same price.
In the field of computers this development could lead to the next generation of super computers, more efficient servers to provide cloud computing and very powerful and reliable home computers. As a national prize-winner it has been described as a step change in liquid cooled PC’s.
Versarien has high growth at its core and is already making a large impact on the community by creating manufacturing jobs in an area of deprivation and regeneration. Supporting apprentice, graduate, and postgraduate programs the business is creating a very capable and success driven team. It is the intention of the company to have a significant place in the local community and to provide sustainable manufacturing roles for the local area. The business supports a growing number of sub-contract services further providing employment and development opportunities. Versarien has set a strategy to be a large employer in the UK supplying the European markets with a UK research centre and local manufacturing where required.
Versarien has a unique product that has international reach, the ability to operate in multiple attractive sectors, and the ability to solve customer problems that exist now. International growth is a key part of the underlying strategy and therefore Versarien is working closely with UKTI to maximise the rate of growth in targeted territories including the USA, Germany and Canada.
A technology roadmap shows multiple avenues of opportunity in other areas not currently exploited including the development of lightweight materials for Aerospace, materials for defence applications, high performance catalytic materials and materials for renewable energy applications. This demonstrates that the company has a sustainable portfolio of products that can be sold globally.
